Yoga Lesson in Savasana

Recently, I started taking yoga classes again. It has been probably 20 years since my last yoga class. Things have changed! When I last took classes, I actually had snarky comments made to me by some of the older women in the class because I was able to do the exercises with ease. Now, I am still one of the youngest in the class but just flopping down and touching the floor is not so easy. Honestly some of the seniors are kicking my butt in flexility. Good on them!!

I am of the belief that as we think, so are we. Our thoughts, beliefs and attitudes directly correlate with the state of our physical bodies. When something has manifested in the physical, I always question my thought patterns.

My bodies new situation is a bound up back and shoulders with a weak core. This lack of core strength is affecting my balance. I have always been a strong, physically active person and actually love hard work. This was never a problem before so what gives.

During savasana (resting pose, a personal favorite), I received an answer to my question. I have spent most of my life pushing through everything with sheer will power, putting my back into it, gettin’ er done. I often ignore my gut. After all, “I can make anything work”, “doesn’t matter what I would prefer”, “doesn’t need to be easy”. So as my back did all the work and my gut instincts atrophy from lack of attention, so has my core.

We don’t need to put on a harness and plow through life on sheer will power. It is my intention going forward to listen to my gut and strengthen my core on every level. I hope you will do the same.
